Alexander Street Woolworths, Crows Nest

Supermarket: 1600m2
Specialty Retail: 500m2
Carparking: 310 spaces

a+ design group were appointed by North Sydney Council as the facade design architect for Woolworths in Crows Nest.  The scope also included financial and feasibility consultancy where a+ design group provided a practical yet innovative built solution to Crows Nest public space.

The project consists of a supermarket, new arcade entrance, specialty retail and four levels of car park.

This façade design translates the colour, vibrancy and liveliness of surrounding shopfronts into a rich layering of planes and textures in the form of a sculptural screen.

This sculptural screen not only creates a play of light and shadow, but also brings to the urban environment street activation and a sense of sculpture and art.

The curved façade reflects the corner pub at the junction of Falcon Street and Pacific Highway, with its awning continuing the horizontal band and the awning line of buildings along Willoughby Road.  This building represents an unification of all the façades into one visual artistic element with colours and interest.

At night this building glows like a beacon, igniting the atmosphere with visual urban interest and energy of unrivalled elegance.

Together, the architecture and artwork are integrated to provide a distinctive identity of street junction, an iconic piece of architecture that strengthens the sense of arrival into Crows Nest and reinforces a sense of place.
