CULLEN residence

BOWRAL, SYDNEY

Nestled in the rolling hills of Bowral, the Cullen Residence reinterprets the rural homestead through a contemporary lens — blending timeless materiality with an intuitive connection to nature. This 490m² residence is arranged as a series of carefully orchestrated pavilions linked by breezeways and courtyards, framing both mountain and garden views while encouraging a fluid indoor-outdoor lifestyle.

The architectural language is informed by its site — steeped in rustic charm yet grounded in modern sensibility. A central chimney anchors the home visually and functionally, evoking the hearth as the emotional core. Gabled rooflines, natural stone, timber, and steel form a palette of warmth and resilience, echoing the tones of the Southern Highlands.

Internally, spatial zoning creates a clear hierarchy of public and private areas. The central living and dining wing opens to multiple courtyards — the Morning, Sunset, and Breakfast Courts — capturing light throughout the day and offering diverse microclimates. The private wing houses bedrooms oriented for privacy, retreat, and panoramic views, while secondary spaces like the mudroom, media room, and loft provide flexibility for family life.

This home is not only a place to dwell but a response to place — where design amplifies the quiet drama of the landscape, and every space celebrates light, comfort, and connection.
